The history of the house
The Finns populated Savukoski in the early 18th century. Joosula house, known as Niskala at that time, got number one in the mapping. Trade was active. Butter, meat and game were exported to Kantalahti in Russia as well as to Finnmark in Norway and brought back salt and fish from the Arctic sea. A market place of that time was located by the river where the sauna is located today.
During the II World War, the centre of Savukoski was burnt down. The house of Joosula is one of the first ones rebuilt right after the war. It has got its present name according to the householders called Jooseppi (=the Finnish version of Joseph) in many generations. There has been a guesthouse through the history of the house.
The host couple
Pentti first came to Savukoski on his hunting tours, liked the district and considered buying a small log cabin until he heard about a log house in the centre of the village. Tuulikki and Pentti Jokiperä became owners of Joosula house in 2005. Pentti renovated the house himself and the couple moved to Lapland in 2007. Tuulikki started as a fysiotherapist in Savukoski. It soon came out that the accommodation capacity of Savukoski was insufficient during the spring winter months and summer events. The accommodation was offered on request and Joosula became a guesthouse again.
Pentti is a passionate hunter and highly interested in food, Tuulikki loves all kinds of sports. She instructs gymnastic groups and takes care of her physiotherapy clients, she goes hiking, paddling, skiing and snowshoeing. They pick up berries and mushrooms. Two dogs Pekko and Pikka welcome guests.
More accommodation will be available for season 2021-2022 as the terraces house close by gets
thoroughly renovated.
